Kelly Space & Technology, Inc. (www.kellyspace.com), San Bernardino, CA, founded 1993 to develop a “tow-launch” technology for low-cost access to space. NASA’s “Eclipse Project” of 1997-1998 validated the tow-launch concept, but there is apparently no money to develop it further. Space-relevant sidelines keep the company going. One of them, a spinoff called Global Energy Systems, produces pipeline quality natural gas (methane) from biomass, good for rocket fuel and electrical power generation via oil-free microturbine or fuel cell in space habitats (where the carbon dioxide would go to boost agricultural production and the waste heat to provide temperature control for the habitat).
